Greyhope Bay – Golden Hour / Blue Hour Shoot

4th of September 2025

Visions photographers silhoutted against the sky by Kate Spinks. It illustrates the beautiful colours we saw around sunset.

Stephen Lynch had taken on the task of finding a suitable spot for our outing around sunset. He chose Greyhope Bay (Torry Battery) as our location. This has great views over the harbour and the city of Aberdeen. The weather was quite variable and I nearly didn’t go because there was a massive downpour just as I was about to leave. Fortunately, the rain passed quickly. I found the others spread around the hill when I arrived a bit after 7 o’clock.

Bob Taylor’s photo of a partial rainbow against the dark sky over the North Sea.
Mark Bisset captured a different interpretation of the light house and rainbow.
David Drage – Sunlight on the pier and a rainbow.

This is something I like about our club outings. I enjoy the different images that our members produce from the same location and time.

Charitha Wijesiriwardana spotted this lone figure looking out over the sea. I like this photo because it shows you the value of not always going for the obvious. Take a look around you. Sometimes you will find a great photo because you were the only one looking the other way.
Another shot by Charitha. Not long with Visions, but he has quickly proven to be an excellent photographer.

Linda DiMaio also attempted to damage her camera sensor and fortunately failed. Nice photo result.

This Blue hour shot by Stephen Lynch shows the harbour lights and lovely colours in the sky.

A common mistake by many people is to pack up the camera the moment the sun sinks below the horizon. This image shows that the best colours are in the hour after sunset. The harbour and city still have detail. The lights sparkle against the dark blue sky. We have a nice golden glow in the lower part of the sky.

A similar shot also by Stephen Lynch – This one has a supply vessel leaving the harbour. I think this is a better photo because we have something happening and the ship creates a better composition. Sometimes all we have to do is wait for it all to come together.
